National Geographic

October 1.  And on this day in 1888, the magazine, National Geographic was published for the first time.   The magazine has published MANY articles about dogs.  My human has an issue from December 1941,  which had an article titled Working Dogs of the World.  Here are a few paintings and photos from that issue:

That article was actually one of a series of articles which later became a book published by National Geographic in 1958 - The Book of Dogs.  It still remains one of my human's favorite books - she loves the illustrations.

Over the years, National Geographic has gone on to do television shows as well.  In 2010 they produced a documentary about dogs.   We found this link to what appears to be the entire show.

As I mentioned, National Geographic has published lots of articles about us canines, and of course they now publish things on-line.  Here is a cool article with some GREAT photos of adventurous dogs around the world.  I'm just not sure why the dogs in THIS household are not in there.  I guess we need to plan a trip to Nepal or we need to learn to herd camels or take up surfing.  I thought our lives were exciting until I saw THESE photos.

A quote from National Geographic says "The dog is the most diverse animal on the planet."  That's for sure!  Think about it - from the tiny chihuahua to the giant Irish Wolfhound.  We are all part of the same family.  And while they say dogs were the earliest domesticated animal, WE dogs know who is  REALLY in charge.  Humans like to THINK that they trained us - but let's face it - when those early wolf ancestors first started hanging out at the caveman's campsites, we KNEW where to get a free meal - and so it continues to this day.  But our bond with humans IS pretty unique, and the benefits of our relationships really go both ways!  I seriously doubt National Geographic has published half as many articles about cats....

Have a good one!  Peace and paws up!
