Independence Day

April 18.  Pet Owners Independence Day.  Ha.  Talk about an oxymoron .  Seriously- if you own a pet, you are no longer independent!  Apparently on this day, pet owners are supposed to do the things we pets do.  Like relax.  And not worry about things. It is supposed to be a day of role reversal.  That seems fine - but honestly, I think you humans are underestimating the things we canines do all day.  I think you think all we do is sleep all day when you are away. That is totally incorrect.   We are on continual guard duty.  24-7.  Not only do we have to look out for burglars, we MUST be ever vigilant about the arrival of bunnies in our yard.  Or cats.  Or porcupines.  Or birds.  Or even leaves - which sometimes DO look menacing.

We are busy all the time.  We must carefully plan the agenda of our humans.  We must walk them.  And get them to prepare and serve our meals. This is hard work.  VERY hard work.  Supervision is a challenging job.

It is true that we canines don't worry about some things - like paying bills, but we DO worry about when our next meal will be served.  We don't worry about our appearance, and in fact, some of us would be quite happy to never be groomed.  At all.  But we DO worry when we hear the water in the bath being run.

We canines do tend to appreciate the simple things in life - a game of fetch, someone scratching our ears, a ride in the car...  And humans could take a lesson from us in learning how to appreciate the simple things in life.  But the biggest thing that humans could learn from us in a day of role reversal - is how to be HAPPY.  And how to give unconditional love.  I must say, we canines do that- and we do it very, very well.  Honestly, our biggest worry is when you will be coming home - when you leave us.  I hope you humans realize that....

So happy Independence Day.  Learn from us canines - and remember - we have a challenging job - but we do it because we love you.  Even when you give us a bath.
